About Ekwusigo Local Government Area

Ekwusigo Local Government Area is a vibrant and culturally rich region located in Anambra State, Nigeria. Nestled in the southeastern part of the country, Ekwusigo LGA is known for its unique blend of traditional values, modern development, and a thriving agricultural economy. Ekwusigo LGA is situated in the heart of Anambra State, with its administrative headquarters in the town of Ozubulu. The LGA shares its borders with other local government areas like Ihiala to the west, Nnewi North and Nnewi South to the north, and Orumba South to the east. The area's topography is generally characterized by rolling hills, fertile plains, and numerous rivers and streams, making it suitable for agriculture. Ekuwusigo local government area is well renowned for cultivating a variety of crops, including maize, yams, cassava, and cocoyam. The region has a number of markets, including the Ichi central market. The LGA also has significant manufacturing, welding, and fishing industries.

Population

Ekwusigo Local Government Area by 2006 National Census Population had a population of 158,429 and by2.5% growth projection is estimated to have 225,761 population in 2023.

Religion

The people of Ekwusigo Local Government Area are predominantly Christians mostly of the Catholic and Anglican faiths. There are however few people who practice Traditional religion.

Land

Ekwusigo Local Government Area has table land, hills and valleys. The land is fertile. There are big Rivers like Ulasi with it's source from Dikenafai in Imo State passing through Ihembosi to Ozubulu till it empties into the Niger. There is also small rivers like Ubu from Okoafia Nnewi running through Ozubulu and Ihembosi till it enters the Ulasi river.

Agriculture

With Ekwusigo Local Government Area sharing boundaries with Ogbaru Local Government Area and the presence of the creek of the Niger, the Local Government offers nice opportunity for arable and livestock farming. The Local Government can also be described as the food basket of Anambra State.

Trade & Industry

The proximity of Ekwusigo Local Government Area to the industrial and commercial Cities of Nnewi and Onitsha offers a big opportunity for trade and industry. A leading Lubricant industry Seahorse has its factory at Ozubulu. The town is also Anambra State Industrial Area.

Mineral

There are many mineral deposits in Ekwusigo Local Government Area such as kaolin, crude oil etc begging to be exploited.

Education

Ekwusigo Local Government Area is home to many Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Institutions. The area has over 8 Government secondary schools and 38 Primary Schools and numerous Private Primary and Secondary Schools.

Health

The Local Government has many Primary Health Centers and secondary health Institutions. There is Government General Hospital at Oraifite, a big Mission hospital, The Joint Hospital at Ozubulu. The Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial hospital at Oraifite ranks has one of the best in Nigeria with it's state of the art modern equipment.

Information & Entertainment

There is a Radio Station at Oraifite, The Blaze FM. The Local Government harbours many nice Hotels which can compete favourable with those in Asia, Europe and America. In all, Ekwusigo Local Government Area remains home for investment and it's a tourist site.
